Seaside Sustainability, a nonprofit North Shore environmental organization committed to protecting the oceans and marine life, is launching a Senior Corps of Volunteers with monthly coastal cleanups at different beaches in the area. Masks and social distance guidelines will be expected.

The first cleanup is planned for Tuesday, August 18 beginning at 8 a.m. at Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester. Parking for the beach is limited to town residents with a 2019/2020 beach parking sticker or valid car registration and a driver's license with a Gloucester address. Beach cleanups help protect marine life; collect data about plastics and other toxic waste harming our ocean ecosystems; and raise public awareness and understanding of the threats to the environment. The data from the Senior Volunteer Corps cleanups will be reported to Ocean Conservancy, an international organization committed to protecting the oceans from its greatest challenges, and will be retained by Seaside Sustainability for its Cape Ann/North Shore data set for its work on micro and macro plastics. In the future, the Senior Corps will offer a variety of activities, both virtual and on-site, working on research, development, grant writing, legislation, and more. Seaside Sustainability, founded in 2017, is headquartered in Gloucester. Seaside Sustainability's mission is to preserve and protect the world's oceans, seas, wetlands, and estuaries by engaging citizens in the critical issues facing our waters, educating the public on best practices for sustainability, and inspiring our communities to take effective action.
