Description
A program of romantic chamber music for strings taking us from the infatuation of the young Webern to the nostalgia of late Strauss, via the tragedy of young love from Zemlinsky, and the anguish that drives Mendelssohn’s final string quartet. The all-star ensemble is led by the Terra Quartet, Silver medalist of the Melbourne Chamber Competition.
Terra String Quartet | Sydney Baedke, soprano | Barry Shiffman, viola | Colin Carr, cello
Named a “rising star to watch” by Opera Canada, soprano Sydney Baedke has been described as possessing a voice of “exquisite lyricism” (The Guardian). The first prize winner of Edmonton Opera’s 2023 Rumbold Vocal Prize Competition, she is a three-time prize winner at the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.
Prizewinners at both the 2023 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and 2023 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the Terra String Quartet is a vibrant young international ensemble based in New York City. Praised for their “remarkable maturity and musicality” (Hyde Park Herald, Chicago), has garnered additional wins including the Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the 2022 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the Christine and David Anderson Career Development Prize at the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition.
Artistic director of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival and classical music at Rockport Music, internationally acclaimed violinist and violist Barry Shiffman is well-respected as a musician, educator and administrator. He was co-founder of the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ), and currently serves as both the Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School and Dean of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Colin Carr appears throughout the world as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher. He has played with major orchestras worldwide, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, the orchestras of Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia, Montréal and all the major orchestras of Australia and New Zealand.
