Description
Join us for GMGI's annual Art Science Lecture and journey into the ocean deep with GMGI scientist Dr. Matt Harke and illustrator and author Lindsey Leigh.
Matt Harke recently had the opportunity to explore one of the most extreme environments on our planet, a hydrothermal vent, using genomic technologies and will share the science and the beauty from his explorations of the deep.
Author Lindsey Leigh will describe how her inspiration by the most weird and wonderful aspects of the natural world led to the creation of her new book, The Deep, and how she believes strongly in the power of art to communicate scientific ideas.
A?bout the speakers:
Matt Harke, Ph.D., is a Research Scientist at GMGI with broad interests in molecular and aquatic microbial ecology which he applies to a variety of environments from the deep sea to coastal systems like the Annisquam River. As biological oceanographer, a central theme of his research is to understand the genetic underpinnings that drive the proliferation of microbes in response to changing conditions in both marine and freshwater ecosystems.
Lindsey Leigh is an illustrator and comic artist originally from Maryland. She has a BFA in illustration
